When It Pays to Be Illegible
By MICHAEL HSU
For those who want to guard against identity theft but don’t like the
mess of a paper shredder, the Kes’pon ID Guard Stamp may be the answer.
Popular in Japan and now available in the United States, it prints
a 2.75-by-1-inch block of 385 characters designed to obscure addresses
and other sensitive information. Its creator, Yusuke Yonetsu, found
that solid ink blocks were ineffective, as text remained legible from
the back. The final design, using 10 letters, 3 askew, in a thick sans-serif
font, repeats the letters over and over. It uses fast-drying and waterproof
permanent ink but is not recommended for glossy paper, which can smear
ink.
What do experts think? It "certainly looks effective" for
things like mailing labels, said Rex Davis, director of operations
at the Identity Theft Resource Center, a nonprofit consultancy in San
Diego. But he said it may not be as easy to identify all the data that
should be obscured on forms like pre-approved credit or bank offers.
Those papers, he said, should be shredded. Each stamp makes about 1,000
impressions before the pad must be replaced. Stamps are $19.99 each;
replacement pads, $5.99 each; (503) 748-8700 or idguardstamp.com. |
